Preventing Violence
Preventing violence is a goal of the American Medical Association, the Minnesota Medical Association, and a concern of our office.
We offer the following to help in case of need

WHERE TO REFER PATIENTS FOR HELP

Battered Women

The coalition will put you in touch with emergency shelters, advocacy services and legal advocacy resources for battered women in communitites throughout the state of Minnesota. Some focus on specific populations such as Hisspanic or Native American women as well as women with disabilities. Know the name of the program in your area and keep the phone number handy to give patients who need emergency shelter or support. All the programs are free, confidential and available 24 hours a day.

The coalition provides education and referrals for advocacy.

Child Abuse
Call your county child protection agency to report suspected abuse and to find out about the crisis nurseries and support services in your area. Keep these numbers handy.

The Community University Health Care Center Provides counseling and social services in Southeast Asian languages.

Crime Victims

Prostitution and Pornography

These programs provide support services for women abused in prostitution and pornography.

Help for Men and Women Who Abuse
If a person confides that he or she is violent to a child or spouse or elderly parent, tell him or her: "It's never okay to hit someone; in fact, it's a crime. If you are hitting someone you love, stop it and get help. If you hurt family members, you are teaching your children to be violent."
Refer them to Parents Anonymous or to a domestic abuse intervention project.
Call the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women for the name of an intervention project for abusers in your area. Two of the projects in Minnesota which provide education and counseling groups for abusers are listed below.
